One of the primary goals of the Museum is to gather historical records related to the equipment in the collection and of sound recording technology.
This includes manuals and promotional materials, as well as the many magazine ads and catalogs that were released profiling the recording equipment.
This era of "magnetic sound recording" when finally available to the public from the late 1940's to the early 1980's is a truly short period of time. Many of the persons who were responsible for the development of this technology are no longer available. It is a major goal of the museum to identify and document as many of the remaining individuals as possible and capture their stories for the Museum.
In December 2012, the Museum conducted an interview with Robert G, Metzner in Beverly Hills, CA. Mr. Metzner was the 1946 founder of Roberts Electronics and Califone (one of the major US audio visual equipment manufacturers). Roberts Recorders (in conjunction with Akai of Japan) supplied many pro-sumer reel to reel tape recorders from the 1050's an into the 1970's. Robert G. Metzner was also the inventor of many unique technological devices. Roberts Recorder was eventually acquired by Rheem (yes the same air conditioning company) and was one of the largest US suppliers of reel to reel tape recorders in the 1960's and 1970's. Mr. Metzner, who is now 95, and his son Richard have agreed to an interview that is to eventually be shown in the Museum.
It is the museum's goal to be able to share this interview and many more including ones completed by the Audio Engineering Society in a theater in the museum.
The Museum will also maintain an archive of information about sound recording that will be available to the public for research.
